WORKSHOP NOTES · OCTOBER 2, 2026

Why your business isn't showing up on Google.

Before you pay anyone for SEO, run this checklist. Nine times out of ten, invisibility comes down to five fixable things — and most of the fixes are free.

The five-minute checklist.

01Your Google Business Profile is missing or unverified

This is the big one. The map results — the three businesses with the map that show up first on "near me" searches — come entirely from Google Business Profiles. No profile, no map. Unverified profile, barely visible. Search your business name on Google right now: if no knowledge panel shows on the right, this is your problem.

The fix: Claim and verify your free profile at google.com/business. Fill in everything: hours, photos, services, description. Verification takes a few days — start it today, not when you need it.

02Your categories are wrong

Google decides which searches you appear for based on your business categories. A Vero Beach plumber listed as "General Contractor" won't show for "plumber near me." We see wrong categories constantly — usually because someone picked the first thing that looked close during setup and never looked again.

The fix: Open your profile, check your primary category first (this carries the most weight), then add every relevant secondary category. Be specific: "HVAC contractor" beats "Contractor."

03You have no reviews — or old ones

Reviews are a top-three local ranking factor, and they also decide whether anyone clicks you once you do show up. A competitor with 40 recent reviews will outrank and outsell you with 3 reviews from 2022, even if you're better at the work. Google reads review count, recency, and whether you respond.

The fix: Ask every happy customer, this week, by text — one message with your review link. Then respond to every review, good and bad. Ten genuine reviews beat a hundred bought ones (which Google deletes anyway, sometimes along with your listing).

04Your name, phone, and address disagree everywhere

If Google sees "Joe's Plumbing" on your website, "Joe's Plumbing LLC" on Yelp, and "Joes Plumbing Vero Beach" on Facebook — with two different phone numbers — it can't tell these are the same business, so it trusts none of them. This is called NAP consistency (name, address, phone), and it's silent killer number one for small businesses that have been around a while.

The fix: Pick one exact name, one phone number — ours is (772) 280-4566 everywhere — and make every listing match it exactly: Yelp, Facebook, BBB, Apple Maps, Bing. Tedious, free, and it works.

05Your website is missing, ancient, or invisible

Google still ranks websites for most searches, and your site is what everything else points to. No site, a site from 2014, or a site Google can't read (all images, no text, no titles) all cap how visible you can be. You don't need anything fancy — a fast five-page site with your real services, real photos, and your phone number does the job.

The fix: Get a real site with proper page titles and your services written out in plain words. If budget is tight, a managed monthly site from Fair Price Websites starts at $25 a month — cheaper than one lost job.

One more thing: AI search.

More customers now ask ChatGPT or voice assistants instead of Googling. Those systems read the same signals — your profile, your reviews, your website's actual words — but they're pickier about clarity. If your site doesn't plainly state what you do, where, and for how much, AI skips you. We check this with our AI readiness scan, and it's becoming as important as Google itself.

Businesses in Sebastian, Fort Pierce, and across the Treasure Coast are all playing the same game: be findable wherever customers look. The checklist above covers both.

Questions we actually get.

How long does it take a new business to show up on Google?

Your business name can appear within days of verifying your profile. Ranking for what customers actually search — "plumber Vero Beach" — takes three to six months of steady work. Anyone promising page one in a week is selling something.

Do I need a website to show up on Google?

Not strictly — a verified profile alone can get you into map results. But without a site you're capped: no ranking for most searches and nowhere for customers to learn more. A simple five-page site removes the ceiling.

Why did my business disappear from Google?

Usual suspects: profile suspended (often after a category or address change), marked permanently closed by mistake, or a duplicate listing splitting your presence. Check your profile dashboard first — Google usually tells you why.

Are paid ads the only way to show up fast?

Ads are the only instant way, and clicks stop the day you stop paying. The free path takes months but compounds. Build the free foundation first so you're not renting visibility forever.
